Avenue Q Testimonial: "The workshop that Sam ran was invaluable. He clearly knew what he was talking about and was very well prepared. His passion and enthusiasm for theatre rubbed off on our cast who were already thrilled at the chance to work with a West End professional. The workshop had structure and the improvement in the cast members could be seen in each stage. Sam also spent time one on one with cast members giving personal tips and recommendations that they carried with them through to the final performance. We would welcome him back again and certainly recommend his workshops to other companies." - Beth McFaull, Oil lamp Productions.

An Introduction To Meisner Technique

Anchor 2

The Meisner Technique is fast becoming one of the most popular acting methods in the world. Despite it's popularity, there are a lack of formal training institutions in the UK that teach the full technique. Developed by Sanford Meisner in New York during the 20th century, The Meisner Technique uses exercises to awaken the actor's emotional responses, leading to a more truthful and naturally responsive performance.

This Workshop includes;

  • A full discussion on the history of the technique, its application, its success stories, and an analysis of the basic question 'What is Acting?'.

  • Exercises introducing the students to the technique including "The Repetition Exercise", "Emotional Preparation" & "Emotional Landscaping".

  • Applying the technique to Pre-prepared text.

This Workshop is perfect for:

  • Professional Actors wanting to learn the technique

  • Actors considering studying Meisner on a longer course.

  • Drama school students who want to learn Meisner outside of college

  • Actors who struggle to connect to true emotion whilst performing.

  • Actors who have worried about crying on cue or having a truthful reaction to emotional material.

  • Actors who have felt  "disconnected" to material or their fellow actors whilst performing.

  • Non Actors who are interested in learning how to communicate more effectively

Participants may bring a monologue or song to use as material during this workshop. Please be "Off Book" for this.

PLEASE NOTE: This work is designed to free the actor to enable them to access their true emotional responses. The work can be challenging, emotionally draining and exposing. Saying that, the workshop is taught with compassion, respect and is always professional. You can be sure you are learning in a very safe and professional environment. Due to the nature of the work we recommend students taking part in this workshop are over 18 years of age.

Dates:  Sunday 16th June AND Monday 17th June 2019

Location: Umbrella Rooms - London

Acting + Musical Theatre Masterclass

'Treat an audition like a performance, not a job interview!'

Sam Lupton has worked in both leading and supporting roles in high profile musical theatre, both on tour and in the west end, and in plays around the country!

This Masterclass focuses on gaining a stronger emotional connection to audition material, resulting in a more truthful and honest performance. Using exercises based on the teachings of Sanford Meisner, this workshop will give 1-on-1 feedback on personal performance and a chance to work as an ensemble being directed by west end actors! The skills learnt can be used in pretty much every genre of acting performance. Perfect for drama school hopefuls, current students and new graduates!

This Workshop includes;

PART 1

  • A group discussion asking the question 'What is acting?'

  • A professional group warm up.

  • Exercises introducing the students to techniques designed to help the actor to achieve a more truthful performance.

  • Exercises introducing students to techniques to achieve a more truthful emotional connection.

  • Students will then perform a pre-prepared 'audition' song* OR speech in front of the group, applying the techniques they have learnt. Feedback will then be given by the group and Sam

  • Part 1 will finish with an industry Q&A where students may ask the staff anything to do with a career in performing.

PART 2

  • People taking the full days workshop will take part in an ensemble workshop, learning a ensemble routine (Movement) set to music. This activity focuses on acting whilst having to perform choreography, as you would find in musical theatre. Please note, no dance experience is necessary.
